We first encounter the concept of cohesion in the two basic types of paragraph structure: the Links-in-a-chain structure and Fixed Perspective. In practice many paragraphs are a mixture of both styles.

189.1 Links-in-a-chain Paragraph Structure

In the Links-in-a-chain approach, the object of each sentence is used as the grammatical subject that begins the next sentence. Thus, new information introduced at the end of a sentence becomes the old information in the next, and so on.

189.2 Links-in-a-chain Paragraph Structure

We studied human populations inhabiting high-altitude environments. High-altitude environments expose inhabitants to hypoxia. Hypoxia occurs as a result of breathing low- oxygen-content air. As a consequence, high-altitude environments such as the Tibetan Plateau, the Andean Altiplano, and the Ethiopian Highlands are all sparsely populated.
